Nonetheless, this is a welcome offering from a singer who does have a truly unique style.
But apart from that, it is difficult not to treat the latter five as a grab-bag of varied quality. The first five tracks build up a sense of urgency and poignancy. There is a pattern of quality amongst the songs here. And don't try to figure out the lyrics either, as they're deliberately meant to be nonsensical. Not all of the songs in here, however, as consistently good ' such as 'The Loxian Gates', whose lyrics don't make any sense. The track 'I Could Never Say Goodbye' makes for a great song to dedicate to your love. And speaking of the latter, it is a combination of her voice as well as the orchestrations ' be it live or synthesised ' that leads the music here.
'Echoes in Rain' is a bit more up-tempo, which manages to groove a little along with the backing string section. Starting with opening track 'The Humming', this song provides a lush and soothing soundscape for the listener.
Enya has been away from music for about seven years now and presumably would have had plenty of time to think about the direction her next album would take. Ever since Irish singer-songwriter Enya (whose real name is Eithne N' Bhraon'in) released her breakthrough album 'Watermark' in 1988 and the single Orinoco Flow a year later, she has honed her signature sound of pleasing tunes imbued with Celtic and Irish melodies.
